Water treatment valves and actuators: complete solutions for every plant

OMAL designs and manufactures both its valves and its actuators in-house for water treatment, supplying complete valve-actuator-accessory groups engineered to work together. The range covers the main sub-sectors: wastewater treatment, depuration, desalination and reverse osmosis, filtration and potabilization, and PFAS treatment. It includes the MAGNUM and THOR ball valves, the KRAVEN butterfly valves, the EA IP68 electric actuators and the AGO pneumatic actuators, also in the AGO Handwheel version with integrated handwheel. The KRAVEN butterfly valves are WRAS certified, while the AGO pneumatic actuator is DNV certified. The solutions also carry conformities such as Pressure Equipment and Ex CE/UKCA, SIL up to SIL3, Fire Safe and TA Luft & Fugitive Emission.

Water treatment valves are shut-off components that manage the fluids in plants where water is treated, purified or made into drinking water. It is a fast-growing sector, moving from low-spec applications toward high-tech plants, and it is fully aligned with sustainability.

At OMAL we design and manufacture both the valves and the actuators in-house. This lets us offer complete solutions, where the valve and the actuator are engineered to work together and deliver the best performance.

Our water treatment series brings together the MAGNUM and THOR ball valves, the KRAVEN butterfly valves, the EA IP68 electric actuator and the pneumatic actuator AGO.

Many of our products are designed for applications where quality and reliability are essential because of the hazard of the fluid or the process, such as the petrochemical sector.

We work with our customer Partners in a co-engineering approach, getting involved in projects from the engineering phase, even before purchase. 

Our engineers start from an on-site discussion to understand the real operational challenges. Then the sales, engineering and technical departments develop the solution together. Our task is to translate the water plant’s real problems into effective engineering solutions, up to custom solutions designed for the specific plant.

Wastewater treatment plants and depuration
In wastewater treatment plants our valves manage the fluids along the various stages of the process. The depuration of wastewater requires resistant materials and reliable sealing, handled by both the ball valves and the butterfly valves in the range.

Desalination and reverse osmosis plants
In desalination plants and in reverse osmosis plants the pressure and the presence of salts make the service demanding: sealing and material resistance matter. Our range meets these needs with stainless steel valves and actuators sized on the real plant conditions.

Water filtration and potabilization
Water that undergoes filtration and potabilization is intended for consumption, so the suitability of the materials in contact with drinking water matters, a requirement that some of our systems confirm with WRAS certification.

PFAS treatment
PFAS treatment is an emerging sub-sector. 

For applications with ozonated water or PFAS there are no specific certifications yet: to ensure the quality of our solutions we start from conformities already obtained in more critical sectors, such as fugitive emission, which is part of our range.

MAGNUM Wafer, the lightweight ball valve

The MAGNUM in its wafer version is our most compact ball valve for water. It is available from DN 15 to DN 100 (1/2” to 4”), with a body in A105 carbon steel or as a 316 stainless steel ball valve
Seats are in modified PTFE, glass- or carbon-filled PTFE, or PEEK. Connections are RF flanged, with ANSI 150-300 and PN 16-40 pressure classes.

THOR Split Body, the flanged ball valve
For larger diameters and pressures, the THOR split body flanged ball valve covers DN 15 to DN 200 (1/2” to 8”), with a body in A105 carbon steel, 316 stainless steel for circuits more exposed to corrosion, or CF8M. 
It reaches up to ANSI 600 and PN 63-100 and, on smaller diameters, up to ANSI 900-1500, with options such as a three-way ball valve version, reduced bore and stem extension.

KRAVEN, the WRAS certified butterfly valve
The KRAVEN is our butterfly valve, suited to water lines and large-diameter circuits. It runs from DN 40 to DN 300 (1”1/2 to 12”), with a cast iron body, a disc in cast iron, CF8M or aluminium bronze, and seals in EPDM, NBR, FKM or PTFE.
It is available as a wafer butterfly valve or lug butterfly valve, with pneumatic, electric or gearbox operation, and it has obtained WRAS certification.

EA IP68, the on/off electric actuator
The EA electric actuator is an on-off rotary type, with torque from 35 to 240 Nm and an aluminium body. The IP68 variant makes it suitable for the damp environments typical of water treatment plants. 
Power supply options include 115 Vac, 230 Vac, 24 Vdc and 24 Vac/dc, plus an anti-condensation space heater.

AGO, the DNV certified pneumatic actuator
The AGO aluminium pneumatic actuator is a scotch yoke type. It is available in double acting (DA, 8 to 8000 Nm) and spring return (SR, 15 to 4000 Nm), in normally closed or normally open versions. It is the product in the series that has obtained DNV certification.

AGO is also available in the AGO Handwheel version, the actuator with integrated handwheel, in double acting (DANV, 60 to 3840 Nm) and spring return (SRNV, 30 to 1920 Nm). It is one of the most appreciated products in the sector because it allows plant commissioning even without compressed air available, combining actuator and manual control in a single body.

Certifications for water treatment: WRAS, fugitive emission and other conformities
In water treatment plants the conformity of components has a direct impact on the safety and reliability of the process. The certifications of our range, issued by independent third parties, give those who design and run the plant a documented guarantee on materials and performance, useful both in product selection and at commissioning.

The WRAS certification (Water Regulations Approval Scheme) attests that materials in contact with water are suitable for drinking water service according to British regulations, through verification of the non-toxicity and suitability of the components. We recently obtained it for the KRAVEN butterfly valves.

For more particular applications, such as ozonated water or PFAS treatment, where dedicated certifications do not yet exist, we bring conformities already obtained in more critical sectors, starting from TA Luft & Fugitive Emission on the containment of fugitive emissions.

Depending on the product family, the range then offers the conformities relevant in industrial applications too: Pressure Equipment CE/UKCA, the Ex CE/UKCA (ATEX) marking for potentially explosive atmospheres, SIL certification up to SIL3 according to the IEC 61508 standard and the Fire Safe qualification on sealing in the event of fire. 

The DNV certification, finally, is available on the AGO pneumatic actuator.

FAQ: Frequently asked questions about water treatment valves and actuators

Which valves are used in water treatment plants?
Mainly ball valves and butterfly valves. The MAGNUM and THOR ball valves ensure reliable fluid shut-off, while the WRAS certified KRAVEN butterfly valve suits water lines and large-diameter circuits.

What does WRAS certification mean for valves?
WRAS certification attests that materials in contact with water are suitable for drinking water service according to British regulations. In our range it applies to the KRAVEN butterfly valves, and it is relevant for potabilization and drinking water distribution.

Is it possible to commission a plant without compressed air?
Yes, thanks to the AGO Handwheel pneumatic actuator with integrated handwheel, which lets you operate the valve manually and commission the plant even when compressed air is not yet available.

Which OMAL solutions for desalination and a reverse osmosis plant?
For desalination and reverse osmosis plants we offer ball valves and butterfly valves in resistant materials, paired with EA IP68 electric or AGO pneumatic actuators, sized on the plant’s pressure and service conditions.

Which materials resist in water treatment applications?
The valves are available in 316 stainless steel and, for butterfly valve discs, also in aluminium bronze. The seals are made of PTFE, PEEK, EPDM, NBR or FKM, depending on the fluid. Electric actuators are available in aluminium, whilst pneumatic actuators are also available in stainless steel or carbon steel.
