Marine valves and actuators: complete groups for onboard fluids

OMAL designs and manufactures both its valves and its actuators in-house for the marine and yacht industry. This way it supplies complete valve-actuator-accessory groups for onboard fluid handling: water treatment, ballast water treatment, sewage treatment, bilge extraction, pool feeding and draining and scupper. The range includes the MAGNUM and THOR ball valves, the KRAVEN butterfly valves, the EA IP68 electric actuators and the DNV certified AGO pneumatic actuators. These are compact, lightweight solutions suited to the marine environment, with certifications such as DNV, RINA, Pressure Equipment and Ex CE/UKCA, SIL up to SIL3, Fire Safe and TA Luft & Fugitive Emission.

Marine valves are shut-off components designed to handle fluids on board yachts and vessels in a marine environment. Here, corrosion resistance, low weight and compact dimensions become decisive requirements, because every circuit, from the water line to the drains, works in tight spaces and almost always with valves automated by an actuator.

At OMAL we design and manufacture both the valves and the actuators in-house for the marine and yacht industry. Our range brings together the MAGNUM and THOR ball valves, the KRAVEN butterfly valves and the EA IP68 electric and AGO pneumatic actuators.

Why choose OMAL marine valves and actuators for yachts and vessels?
For a shipyard or a system integrator the difference comes down to three practical fronts: who supplies the group, how much it weighs and takes up on board, and how it is automated. On each of these points our approach delivers a measurable advantage.

A single point of contact for the valve and actuator assembly
Valve and actuator are born in the same plant: the group arrives already coupled and correctly sized, with no misalignment between valve, gearbox and stem. This way, the shipyard has a single technical reference for the whole group, instead of components bought separately from different suppliers.

Compact, lightweight solutions for onboard spaces
On board yachts and boats, technical spaces are often limited. That’s why the weight and footprint of the installed assembly make all the difference. 

The lightweight version of the MAGNUM ball valve and the KRAVEN butterfly valves help reduce weight and size, while keeping the valve-actuator assembly compact as well. 

The DANV actuator with an integrated handwheel addresses the same need by eliminating the need for a separate component and its associated connection kit, further reducing the overall footprint.

Electric automation where there is no compressed air
In the marine sector compressed air is not always available on board, which is why at OMAL we also give room to electric automation

The EA IP68 electric actuator is an on-off rotary type and integrates easily into onboard systems, with a protection rating that helps in the damp environments typical of boating. Where compressed air is available, the range is completed by the AGO pneumatic actuator.

Our range of marine valves and actuators
Our Maritime and Yacht Industry series includes two valve families and two types of automation.

The MAGNUM and THOR ball valves cover reliable fluid shut-off, from the most compact lines up to the largest diameters and pressures. The KRAVEN butterfly valve serves the large-diameter water lines while keeping the weight low.

On the control side, the EA IP68 electric actuator works well where compressed air is missing, while the AGO pneumatic actuator, DNV certified, is the right choice when air is available on board.

MAGNUM Wafer, the lightweight marine ball valve

The MAGNUM wafer-type ball valve is our most compact marine ball valve and is available in sizes from DN 15 to DN 100 (1/2“ to 4”).

The ball valve body is made of A105 carbon steel, or it is available as a 316 stainless steel ball valve. The seats are made of modified PTFE, glass-filled PTFE, carbon-filled PTFE, or PEEK, while the connections are RF flanged, with pressure classes ANSI 150–300 and PN 16–40.

THOR Split Body, the flanged ball valve
For larger diameters and pressures, the THOR split body flanged ball valve covers DN 15 to DN 200 (1/2” to 8”), with a body in A105 carbon steel, 316 stainless steel or CF8M. It is therefore also available as a stainless steel ball valve for circuits more exposed to corrosion. 

It reaches up to ANSI 600 and PN 63-100 and, on smaller diameters, up to ANSI 900-1500, with options such as a three way ball valve version, reduced bore and stem extension.

KRAVEN, our marine butterfly valve
The KRAVEN is our marine butterfly valve, designed for onboard lines and large-diameter circuits, where they maintain a low weight and compact size. It runs from DN 40 to DN 300 (1”1/2 to 12”), with a cast iron body, a disc made of cast iron, CF8M, or aluminum bronze, and seats made of EPDM, NBR, FKM, or PTFE.

It is available as a wafer butterfly valve or lug butterfly valve, with pneumatic, electric or gearbox operation.

EA IP68, the on/off electric actuator
The EA electric actuator is an on-off rotary type, with torque from 35 to 240 Nm and an aluminium body. The IP68 variant makes it suitable for damp onboard environments. 

Power supply options include 115 Vac, 230 Vac, 24 Vdc and 24 Vac/dc, plus an anti-condensation space heater. The EA IP68 is available on request.

AGO, the DNV certified pneumatic actuator
The AGO aluminium pneumatic actuator is a scotch yoke type. It is available in double acting (DA, 8 to 8000 Nm) and spring return (SR, 15 to 4000 Nm), in normally closed or normally open versions, and it is the product in the series that holds the DNV certification

The same family includes the AGO Handwheel, the version with an integrated handwheel (DANV in double acting, SRNV in spring return): it combines actuator and manual control in a single body, removes the separate component and its connection kit and so reduces the overall footprint in onboard applications.

Our certifications for the marine industry: DNV, RINA and the other conformities
Our marine valves and actuators are built to withstand the toughest conditions on board, and the certifications they carry prove it through verification by independent third parties. For the shipyard and the system integrator this means starting from components that are already qualified, without having to demonstrate the product’s suitability after the fact.

The DNV certification is issued by an international ship classification society and attests the product’s suitability for use on board according to ship classification rules. In our range it applies to the AGO pneumatic actuator.

The RINA certification, from the classification body of the same name, serves a similar purpose and is available on certain types of installation.

Alongside these, depending on the product family, there are the conformities that also matter in industrial applications.

The Pressure Equipment CE/UKCA, which applies to our MAGNUM and THOR ball valves and to the KRAVEN butterfly valve, attests conformity with the pressure equipment directive for the European and British markets. The Ex CE/UKCA (ATEX) marking, available for MAGNUM, THOR, KRAVEN and AGO, makes the products suitable for use in potentially explosive atmospheres.

The SIL certification, up to SIL3, applies to MAGNUM, THOR and AGO and concerns functional safety according to the IEC 61508 standard, indicating how reliable the component is in its safety functions.

The Fire Safe qualification attests that our ball valves keep their seal even after exposure to fire. TA Luft & Fugitive Emission, again achieved by our ball valves, concerns the containment of fugitive emissions, that is leakage to the outside from the stem seal.

FAQ: Frequently asked questions about marine valves and actuators
Which valves are used for onboard fluid handling?
On board, ball valves and butterfly valves are mainly used. The former, such as MAGNUM and THOR, ensure reliable fluid shut-off; the KRAVEN butterfly valve is chosen for water lines and large-diameter circuits.

Electric or pneumatic automation for onboard systems?
It depends on the availability of compressed air. When it is missing, electric automation with the EA IP68 actuator is the simplest to integrate. The AGO pneumatic actuator, on the other hand, may be a suitable solution when the system uses compressed air and DNV certification is required.

Are OMAL marine valves and actuators DNV certified?
The DNV certification is available on the AGO pneumatic actuator. For other products, any marine certifications are available upon request or depending on the configuration.

Which materials withstand the marine environment?
To resist corrosion, the valves are available in 316 stainless steel and, for butterfly valve discs, also in aluminium bronze. The actuators are made of aluminium, with special coatings (for example PTFE, nickel or zinc plating) for the most demanding conditions.

Which diameters do OMAL marine valves cover?
The MAGNUM ball valves cover DN 15 to DN 100, the THOR DN 15 to DN 200 and the KRAVEN butterfly valves DN 40 to DN 300, meeting both small circuits and larger-diameter water lines.
